On the morning of August 9, 1945, at precisely 11:02 a.m. local time, the United States deployed its second atomic weapon in wartime, releasing the plutonium-implosion device nicknamed “Fat Man” over the Urakami Valley of Nagasaki. The August 9, 1945, bombing of Nagasaki remains an indelible testament to both the heights of human ingenuity and the depths of human suffering.
